Digital Safety Matters: Cybersecurity and Data Protection Seminar
Last April 14, 2026, I attended an informative webinar entitled “Digital Safety Matters: Cybersecurity and Data Protection Seminar” from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The webinar focused on the importance of cybersecurity, data protection, and responsible online behavior in today’s digital world.
The speaker, Ms. Ethel Grace Verana, owner of Computer Programming Services, shared valuable insights about cybersecurity and how individuals can protect themselves from different online threats. She also discussed her experiences as an IT trainer and speaker, making the session more engaging and relatable for students and aspiring IT professionals.
One of the main topics discussed during the webinar was the meaning and importance of cybersecurity. Cybersecurity was explained as the practice of protecting computers, systems, networks, and data from cyber attacks and unauthorized access. The discussion emphasized the importance of privacy, confidentiality, integrity, and availability in maintaining digital security.
The webinar also highlighted the Data Privacy Act of 2012 and its role in protecting personal information. I learned how important it is to handle sensitive data responsibly, especially in schools, businesses, government offices, and healthcare institutions.
Another important discussion was about common cybercrimes such as phishing, identity theft, scams, and cyberbullying. The speaker reminded participants to be cautious when sharing personal information online and to always verify websites, emails, and online transactions before providing sensitive details.
Several cybersecurity practices were also shared during the webinar, including:
- Using strong and secure passwords
- Updating software regularly
- Avoiding suspicious websites and links
- Using antivirus software and firewalls
- Setting proper privacy settings on social media accounts
- Avoiding public Wi-Fi when handling sensitive transactions
As a BSIT student, this webinar helped me understand the importance of cybersecurity in both personal and professional settings. It encouraged me to become more responsible in using technology and protecting data online. I also realized that cybersecurity is not only for IT professionals but for everyone who uses digital platforms and the internet.
Overall, the webinar was educational, relevant, and beneficial. It increased my awareness about digital safety and inspired me to continue learning more about cybersecurity and data protection.
